Jan 29, 2009 (The Press-Republican - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- FDO | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- ELIZABETHTOWN -- The long-anticipated opening of the Family Dollar store here will take place today. The store will be located on the south end of the hamlet on Route 9.

Though many local citizens had expected the store to open in September or October, Joshua Braverman from Family Dollar headquarters said, "The store is opening within our planned opening guidelines for that location."

The site formerly housed a popular eatery, the D and B Family Restaurant.

Family Dollar is often confused with so-called "dollar stores," which sell their wares for one dollar. Most of the Family Dollar items range from one dollar to around $40.

The stores feature items ranging from snack foods to furniture and are competitive with chain discount stores.

Store Manager Steven Reynolds of Jay, a 10-year employee with Family Dollar, said, "We're family oriented," noting the establishment will not be merchandising alcohol or tobacco products.

The grand opening will take place with a ribbon-cutting ceremony around 9 a.m. Saturday.

The first 50 customers that day will receive a $5 gift certificate. In addition, several door prizes will be given out, including kids' bikes and a basketball goal set with ball.
